March 2001 weekend in the Adirondacks

Photos from a trip Bob Melville and I took in March, 2001. The blizzard-that-wasn't in New Jersey the week before had dumped a couple of feet of snow up in the Adirondacks, so of course we had to go skiing. It was almost too much of a good thing, since a lot of the trails hadn't been well-broken. Click on one of the thumbnails to see a larger image.

On Saturday, we decided to try for the summit of Mount Marcy. The weather wasn't really great, but the forecast seemed to indicate that it would be better than on Sunday. And we wouldn't be so tired :-).

On Sunday we thought we would take it easy with a ski around the Whale's Tail and up to Avalanche Lake. But the Whale's Tail was barely broken, and there was so much snow that it turned into a real struggle. It was warm as well, and the snow was very slick, which made life even harder. By the time we got to Marcy dam, we were so exhausted that we skipped that Avalanche Lake part.
